STAY TOXIN-FREE WITH AYURVEDIC DETOX WATER

There are a lot of different cleansing and detoxing techniques out there, and finding the one that’s right for you can sometimes feel overwhelming. If you really just want to give your body a break, hit the reset button on your digestive system, and do a short detox the ayurveda way without a lot of fuss. Here are the top ayurvedic detox water recipes you should probably try:

  • Tulsi (holy basil): The antibacterial, antiseptic, and calming properties of tulsi help remove congestion (for excess kapha dosha) from the lungs while soothing the nerves (for excess vata dosha).
  • Ginger: The stimulant, expectorant, and carminative properties of ginger help remove excess phlegm and mucus from the body, while aiding digestion.
  • Cumin-coriander-fennel: Cumin strengthens digestion and absorption, coriander helps balance excess pitta and lower inflammation, and fennel helps reduce gas while strengthening digestive fire (agni). The fiber content of fennel seeds aids digestion even further, while also helping lower cholesterol.

FENNEL DETOX WATER

Boil two quarts of water for 2 minutes. Take it off the heat and add 1/2 tsp. fennel seed 1/2 tsp coriander seeds and a few mint leaves. Let the spices infuse in the water for another 10 minutes. Store it hot inside a thermos, but before drinking pour it into a cup and let it cool to room temperature in summer. In winter, it can be had slightly warm.

MINT DETOX WATER

You need ½ cups pure water, 2 heaping teaspoons peppermint or fresh mint, 1 heaping teaspoon brahmi gotu/kola powder, ¼ teaspoon natural mineral salt, ¼ lime (squeezed juice) and 2 teaspoons jaggery. Boil water. Remove from heat and add herbs, salt, and lime. Steep ten minutes, strain, add jaggery and drink warm or at room temperature.

GINGER DETOX WATER

Boil two quarts of water for 2 minutes. Take it off the heat and add 1/4 tsp. fennel seed 2 rose buds 1 clove Store it hot inside a thermos, but before drinking pour it into a cup and let it cool to room temperature in summer. In winter, it can be had slightly warm.

BASIL DETOX WATER

Boil two quarts of water for 5 minutes. Take it off the heat and add 3 holy basil leaves 2 thin slices of fresh ginger 1/4 tsp. of cumin 1/2 tsp. of fennel Place the water and spices in a thermos, and sip the water at a hot or warm temperature throughout the day.

TURMERIC DETOX WATER

You need 1 Quart boiling water, 1-2 Tablespoons thinly sliced ginger, 1 Tablespoon thinly sliced fresh turmeric ( or ½ teaspoon ground), 1-2 teaspoons coriander seeds, 1-2 teaspoons cumin seeds, 1-2 teaspoons fennel seeds, 1-2  bags (or Tablespoon) green tea and squeeze of lemon. LEMON DETOX WATER

You need about ½ gallon of purified water, ½ lemon sliced, ½ lime sliced, ½ grapefruit sliced (note that you can also substitute or add oranges if you want), 1 cup of sliced cucumber with peels, 1 teaspoon of freshly grated ginger, 7-8 basil leaves and a handful of fresh peppermint leaves. Just add all of the ingredients into a pitcher and cover with ice. Refrigerate for at least a couple of hours before serving and discard after 24 hours as the citrus fruits tend to get a little mushy.
