Carpets and rugs are the most soiled things in the house because we sit on it, have food on it, walk on it and what not! It is exposed to every risk of getting dirty and stained. Carpets and rugs usually get dirty by pet fur, ketchup stains, wine stains, juice stains, soil etc. and with time, the carpet or rug can look soiled and dirty- certainly not a good site. Old stains are not easy to get rid of; once dirt goes into carpet, it doesn’t easily come out. But with simple tips and steps, you can clean all the mess caused by fresh stains or old ones without a professional help and here are some:

"REMOVEVINEGAR WATER

Vinegar is an all rounder! It is necessary for every house to have a can of white vinegar keeping in mind its uses and benefits. If you have a stain- fresh or old, vinegar diluted in water can do the trick. If your stain is really old, you may use concentrated vinegar. Simply vacuum the stain to remove any dust from it and put vinegar on it. Let the stain soak it completely. If the vinegar dries after few hours, again pour vinegar over it and this time, add a dry paper towel on it and press it hard. All the vinegar should get soaked up in the paper towel. Repeat this and in the end, use plain water 1-2 times. The stain should completely come off in the end.

BEER

If you have beer handy or at home, you can actually use it to remove not-so-old stains from the carpets and rugs. Simply blot the stain if fresh and liberally spray beer on it. Let it work for 30 minutes and blot t using a tissue. Repeat the process until all the stain comes off.

SOAPY VINEGAR WATER

If you find your old stain still has not come off in the first attempt, this trick should definitely work. This is applicable for both fresh and old stains. If the stain is fresh, spray some plain water on it and blot it using a paper towel. Now, add ½ tablespoon soapy liquid in a spray bottle followed by 1 cup vinegar. Shake the soapy solution gently and spray it on the stain. Let it work for an hour and spray plain water on it. Blot it using paper towel and repeat until the entire soapy residue comes off. In the end, if your carpet or rug is light in colour, you may sprinkle some cornstarch or baking soda to soak up the wetness and dry the carpet quickly. Vacuum is needed.

BAKING SODA+ VINEGAR SOAPY SOLUTION

Baking soda works wonders in clearing up any kind of stain. If the stain is old, spray some water on it and sprinkle baking soda liberally; whereas if the stain is fresh you may directly add baking soda. Vacuum after 30 minutes. Now make the soapy vinegar solution as mentioned in the above step and saturate the stain with it. Take a small toothbrush and gently scrub the area in small circles gently since you don’t want to spoil your carpet or rug. Now spray clean water on it liberally and soak it with a towel. Place the towel on it and on that keep something heavy so as to completely bloat the surface. Remove the towel after 30 minutes and let the carpet air dry.

SHAVING CREAM

Shaving cream works wonders on sticky stains like oil, grease, juice and other sticky food stains. Simply put some shaving cream (the one that comes in a can) on the stained spot, let it work for 10 minutes and blot it using a wet sponge with gentle scrubbing. Another method is to scrub the area gently using toothbrush and shaving cream. Let it dry and then scrub it off using soft damp cloth.

Corn Starch: Found some ink stains on the Carpet. Mix 1 spoon of corn starch in water and make it a thick paste. Spread the paste on the inked spot and leave it for few minutes. Slowly remove it and you will no longer see the ink marks on your carpet. Corn starch is also used for soaking up oil and greasy stains.

Shaving Cream: The juice stains on the carpet can be easily removed using shaving cream. Squirt some shaving cream on the affected area, wipe it with a dampen sponge or cloth in a few seconds. The change will be seen. It can also be used to deal with the oily and greasy stains.

Ammonia: NH4, the chemical name for Ammonia, can be used to lift out the stains on carpet and upholstery. Take 1/2 cup ammonia in 2 litres of warm water and stir properly. Sponge the material in the mix and allow it to dry completely. The chemical properties of Ammonia would have completely worked on these stains.

Baking Soda: Baking Soda can be quickly used to remove those vomit or urine stains from the carpet. Clean at the initial stage as much as it is possible, sprinkle some baking soda on the affected area. Pat it using paper towel and let it dry completely. Baking soda will clean, sanitize and deodorize the messy spot.

Tooth Brush: The soft tender brush is a great help in scrubbing as well as removing the stains. Sprinkle the stain removing agent on the tooth brush and rub on the stains gently till it is gone.

Ice Cubes: Haven’t heard of it as an anti-stain product? Try it out on those hard chewing gum that is trying to take permanent place on your carpet. Freeze the gums first with ice cubes in a plastic bag, scrape it off with a butter knife and blot with a dry cleaning fluid.
