Ginger is a flowering plant in the family Zingiberaceae; its root is widely used as a spice, and it has been used in folk medicine for thousands of years. Ginger root and ginger essential oil are gaining popularity for their preservation and flavoring capabilities. The most potent form of ginger is the essential oil because it contains the highest levels of gingerol. The essential oil is the best way to use ginger as medicine; and here is how to make one along with its benefits:


You will need:

  • 1 cup Fresh ginger
  • 1 cup olive oil or coconut oil
  • Oven-safe bowl
  • Cheese grater


Rinse a cup of fresh ginger, including the skin, thoroughly, and let dry for a few hours.

Pour ½ cup olive oil or coconut oil in an oven-safe bowl. Chop the ginger and then shred using a clean cheese grater.

Add to the oil and mix well. Put the mixture in the double boiler and leave it to simmer on low heat (150 degrees Fahrenheit) for at least two hours. Pour the mixture through an unbleached cheesecloth to filter it and take out the bits of ginger.

Once all the oil has been filtered, squeeze out the remaining oil from the cheesecloth. Transfer the ginger oil into clean vials or bottles and store in a cool dry place.

Ginger is useful for hair care as well. Ginger oil is useful in controlling dandruff and promote hair growth.

Dandruff – Treat split ends and dandruff! Add few drops of the ginger oil to your shampoo to help get rid of frayed ends.

Hair Growth : Since ginger stimulates blood circulation, you can use it for hair growth and improve texture. Mix 2 Tsp. of ginger oil to 6 Tbsp. jojoba oil. Massage into the scalp and let sit for 20 minutes (overnight if you want). Then rinse thoroughly.


Treat Acne – Ginger contains powerful antiseptic properties, that prevents acne formation by actively killing bacteria on the skin’s surface and deep inside the pores. Add few drops of ginger oil to your face wash or use it as a spot treatment to treat acne. You can add a few drops to a face pack, ginger oil will help get a clear and healthy skin.

Even skin tone –  Ginger evens skin tone and improves elasticity.  Mix few drops of ginger oil with 1 tbsp of rice flour and 1 tbsp of raw honey. Leave it on for up to 30 minutes, and rinse to reveal radiant skin.

Cellulite Remedy –  It is also known to reduce cellulite. It helps to stimulate circulation and tone your skin with a cellulite-busting body oil. Mix 10 drops of ginger oil with 1/4 cup of almond oil. Massage oil on the cellulite before going to bed.
