HOW TO PREVENT POST-WORKOUT BREAKOUTS

There’s no disputing the fact that exercise is good for the human body. But does working up a sweat actually do anything good for your skin or make you more prone to breakouts? Sunscreen, sweat, and plain old gym grime can stuff up pores and lead to acne and other blemishes on your face and body. Are you as sick and tired of breaking out after a workout? No more worries, here are some tricks to prevent post workout breakouts:

HOW TO PREVENT POST-WORKOUT BREAKOUTS WEAR COMFORTABLE TEES AND AVOID COTTON

Cotton absorbs sweat and dries slowly, which can allow dirt and oil to penetrate into the skin. Choose synthetic fabrics, like a polyester or lycra blend, for your workout wear. These pull the sweat from your body and dry quickly to help quell breakouts.

AVOID MAKEUP WHILE WORKING OUT

The combination of sweat and wearing makeup can cause a buildup of excess oil. Since pores open up while sweating, we don’t want to block the skin’s natural ability to breathe by clogging it up with makeup. That can actually lead to acne cosmetic; a form of acne that looks like little red bumps with no inflammation. Make a habit of using cleansing towelettes, which you can easily store in your gym bag.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SPORTS BRA

The most important part of your workout wardrobe, no matter your cup size, is your sports bra. But it could also be the reason why you are noticing so many breakouts on your chest. The fabric blend and tight elastic can cause a build-up of sweat that leads to acne breakouts.

WASHING UP

Right after a sweaty, cardio-intense workout, gently wash your face (especially if you are wearing makeup or sunscreen) and take a shower. Do not scrub the skin because that can cause more acne problems. Always carry your own towel and yoga mat, and clean them after each and every workout.

MOISTURIZE

If you’re prone to post-gym breakouts don’t avoid a moisturiser all together, instead try a non-comedogenic version like cetaphil. By nature they are the creams that won’t clog pores, or feel heavy on your skin.

USE SPECIFIC PRODUCTS

If you aren’t able to immediately clean your skin after working out, use a salicylic acid-based toner or facial wipes. Use them right after finishing the workout, to clean away dirt and prevent breakouts and inflammation. Salicylic acid has proven to be highly effective in breaking down the material or ‘glue’ deep inside pores that can lead to pimples.

WIPE THE EQUIPMENTS BEFORE USING

Always wipe the equipment you are using, atleast the places on equipment you frequently touch. Bacteria breeds on these machines, and if you touch your face just once during your workout, that nasty stuff has now travelled to your skin. Make sure to wipe each surface with antibacterial wipes before using.
