HOME REMEDIES FOR SENSITIVE TEETHSensitive teeth can be a painful condition. People with tooth sensitivity tend to experience a sharp pain while eating or drinking anything very hot, cold, sweet or sour. They also experience pain on breathing throught mouth when teeth comes in contact with air. This sensitivity occurs because the protective enamel around the teeth has got eroded thus exposing the nerve endings under the teeth. Primary causes of the erosion are plaque, cavities and infections, acidic foods, aggressively brushing with hard-bristled toothbrush and using commerical teeth whitening products. However, there are some natural home remedies to cure this condition.

Salt water:

Add 2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of lukewarm water and rinse your mouth with it. Do this twice everyday in the morning and night. This will cleanse your mouth of bacteral infections and reduce sensitivity.

Clove oil:

Every night, before going to sleep, apply few drops of clove oil using cotton on gums and teeth. This will strengthen teeth and relieve from sensitivity and sharp pain.

Onions:

Chewing raw onions daily can also treat sensitiveness.

Mustard oil:

Take 2 teaspoon of mustard oil and add some rock salt to it. Using your index finger, massage this slowly onto your teeth and gums. This is an effective home remedy for quick relief from tooth sensitivity. You can also add some crushed cloves to the mix.

Cinnamon:

Boil cinnamon and clove in a pan of water. Strain and gargle with the liquid. This will prevent further erosion of the teeth.

Garlic:

Crush a fresh garlic, mix with salt and apply on affected area. Leave on for 10 minutes and wash off. This is an effective treatment for sensitive teeth.

Aloevera gel:

Apply fresh aloe vera gel to the painful area twice a day. This will soothe sensitivity.

Tea:

Have a cup of thyme and sage tea everyday. It refreshes mouth and being anti-bacterial, it also reduces tooth sensitiveness. Apart from thyme tea, regular green tea can also ease teeth sensitivity as it contains antioxidants called polyphenols to protect the gums. Chamomile infused herbal tea can also give relief from sensitivity.

Asafoetida:

Take a pinch of asafoetida and mix with lemon juice and warm it lightly. Apply the warm mixture on teeth to get relief from sensitive pain.

Honey:

Mix a spoon of honey in a glass of warm water and rinse your mouth with it. Doing this everyday will protect the teeth enamel from further erosion.

Other tips:

  • Avoid having acidic foods as it can further erode your teeth.
  • Use a toothpaste made especially for sensitive teeth.
  • Go for a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Avoid sodas and cola drinks.
  • Do not mix hot and cold items together like having cold icecream after hot coffee as they will aggravate the sensitivity.
