Choosing the best hair straightener - TYPES OF HAIR STRAIGHTENERSHair straighteners are divided into 2 main categories- size and materials used. Read on to know about it:

DIFFERENT SIZES

Hair straighteners come in different sizes depending upon their use. Before you buy any straightener, you need to figure out what sizes do you really need.

½” MINI FLAT IRON

These flat irons are very tiny and easy to carry around. They are usually used by girls with pixie haircuts. Also, it is best to be used for straightening bangs and tiny piece of hair.

1” FLAT IRON

These flat irons are best for thin and short hair. If you have fine hair which is shoulder length, this hair straightener will work better for you.

1 ¼” FLAT IRON

If you have shoulder length hair but thick, you can go with this one. Can easily be used over bigger, but shorter sections of hair.

1 ½” FLAT IRON

If you have thick, curly and coarse hair that is below the shoulders, this flat iron can work better for you. The size is appropriate for thick and below shoulder length hair.

2” FLAT IRON

This flat iron is perfect for very long and thick hair. The size can effectively straighten thick and coarse hair so you need not worry about only half hair getting straight and rest remaining frizzy. The plate size too is decent to cover up most of the hair so you finish up quickly.

TYPES OF PLATES

There are 3 main types of plates namely ceramic plates, titanium plates and tourmaline plates that are used in straighteners and you certainly need to be aware of them.

CERAMIC PLATED FLAT IRONS

Ceramic plates heat up quickly since they are good conductors of heat. They have even heat distribution and hence less the chances of burning your hair or making it frizzy later. They cause less friction and hence less damage to the hair. Always opt for hair straighteners that have plates made up of ceramic and not just ceramic coated since the coating can come off after several uses; this can cause hair damage.

TITANIUM PLATED FLAT IRONS

Titanium flat irons are great for thick and coarse hair. They heat up ever better than the ceramic plated flat irons and hold the temperatures at a consistent level for an even straightening. It is a lightweight material that also has an ionic charge; this makes your hair shiny and smooth. If you have thin sparse hair, it is better to avoid this since high heat can be damaging.

TOURMALINE PLATED FLAT IRONS

Tourmaline is a crystalline material that is naturally occurring. It is crushed up and used to coat the usual flat plates that are used in hair straighteners. These plates make hair smoother, shinier and less frizzy by removing the static in the hair.
